Seasonal Shorts: A Quarterly Reading Series

Last October, over lunch at Oakland's Red Oak Cafe, writer Karen Lillis asked if I might like to read with Ben Tanzer, who was coming to town the following month. I was eager to join forces with him, and Karen--who was finishing up coursework for her Master of Library Science degree--subsequently asked Duquesne Professor Craig Bernier to share some of his work. Karen suggested several names for the reading, one of which was "Winter Shorts." This immediately conjured an image of Santa in red flannel Daisy Dukes whose leg holes were trimmmed in white fur (yeah, I know....I wonder about my brain, too, on occasion.) Long story short, this is how the quarterly 'seasonal shorts' reading series was born. Ben, Craig, and I read to a really nice crowd at Te Cafe in early November, as rain slanted against the windows outside.

Spring has now burst forth in the Burgh, and we are beginning the series in earnest, with the next installment bringing several writers to the Burgh from far-away places, including Hawaii, the state author and fight journalist Marshal Carper currently calls home.

Check out the bill for May 14th:
